Narendra Modi was reelected chief minister of Gujarat in and He is credited with bringing prosperity and development to Gujarat and is seen as a corrupt-free and efficient administrator. However, some say he has done little to alleviate poverty and improve living standards.

In May , he and his party were victorious, taking of the seats in the Lok Sabha. On May 26, Modi was sworn in as the 14th prime minister of India and the first to have been born after the country got its independence from the U.

Policy Since becoming prime minister, Modi has encouraged foreign businesses to invest in India. He has lifted various regulations - permits and inspections - so that businesses could grow more easily. He has decreased spending on social welfare programs and has encouraged the privatization of healthcare, although he has devised a policy on universal healthcare for those citizens with serious ailments.

In he launched a "Clean India" campaign, which focused on sanitation and the construction of millions of toilets in rural areas. His environment policies have been lax, especially when those policies hamper industrial growth. Under Modi's power, he has suppressed the influence of civil society organizations, such as Greenpeace, the Sierra Club, Avaaz, and other humanitarian groups, citing they prevent economic growth. He is only second to President Obama for having the most social media followers as a political figure.

Following this, I read about the various described incidents on the internet and in the book's appendix. I am feeling a bit ashamed about myself. Although, not a politician-basher by nature, I have sometimes participated in what I can now describe as "absolute trash"-like politics sessions with my colleagues and people around me. I lived in Gujarat for 20 years out of my 24 - 10 of those after the Gujarat riots.

It took a biography to tell me that Modi did much more than just improve Surat's roads and industries. The book revolves around Narendra Modi's life. But after the first half or so, it is an analysis of Modi's stint as Gujarat CM since he took over in October Gujarat riots of have been analyzed in what appears to be an impartial manner - there is not much adulation, not much rapping. There are praises for Modi's stoicism. There is a clear recommendation for where Gujarat is lagging yet in spite of its golden projection.

I enjoyed the read not only because of the impartial and unemotional tone of the author, but also because like the Steve Jobs autobiography the author has managed to extract a lot from a man assumed to be a closed book to the outside world. And what you read will definitely impress you. Young Indians - especially if you have spent even a little time in Gujarat and experienced "development" - you need to know the man better.

Marino analyses the Modi background, his philosophy, 02 riots, Modi's step by step actions, the Guj model, and his stature as a national leader with objective and investigative approach. Narendra Modi's political biography is a really good book and an eye opener on what really happened during the key hours of the riots.

It also sheds a lot of light on the life of our PM before and way up till June-July time frame. The book looks a events with an unbiased view without the prejudices seen in most print and news media. Aug 21, Adithya Jain rated it liked it Shelves: The book charts out the journey of Narendra Modi from a boy in a small village in Gujarat to the post of Prime Minister of India.

The author says that he has tried to be objective at every point.

He has, in fact, talked about faults within the Modi model and has also talked about the successes of Modi. The book ultimately turns out to look quite supportive of Modi's model. But I have to admit that the author has stuck to facts and done a good enough job to makes it quite difficult for the Modi detractors to rubbish the book. The book talks about Modi's life from an outsider's perspective. It sometimes feels that it is more about what Modi has done than who Modi is. But there are times when the descriptions of Modi and his character are top-notch.

The way the author describes Modi's relationship with his mother and father are examples of these. But I felt at the end of the book that I did not get a full description of the person who I wanted to read about. Maybe the author simply did not have the information or he chose not to put it all, I don't know.

In a nut shell, it was a good read.

A good summary of the most talked about politician of the decade. The book was released before Modi became PM, so the moment of Modi's success is not part of the book. The book is worth a read any day.

As the elections approach, Modi will be looking to win a second term. Much has been done in the last 4 years but lots more still needs to be done. Read the book if you wish to get a gist of Modi's life - from his childhood days to where he has reached now.

The author has presented a prestine and articulate account of the life of Narendra Modi in a positive light, as a biography is meant to be. It is an enjoyable read and by far the best resource to understand the most important aspects of Modi's life, his marriage, RSS, godhra and it's aftermath.

A must read for someone who appreciates him and a even more recommended reading for those who are yet to know and understand what Modi's model of governance and his philosophy is. May 22, Virag Padalkar rated it it was amazing.

Complete review published on https: A very engaging and well written book that tries to delve into the making of Modi the PM-elect of India. One of the few books where an actual effort is made to understand the person rather than just cry hoarse about pre-conceived notions marketed by the media.

Aug 27, Yash Sharma rated it really liked it. The chaiwala who became the Prime minister of India: Narendra damodar das Modi I was born in a very poor family. I used to sell tea in a railway coach as a child.

My mother used to wash utensils and do lowly household work in the houses of others to earn a livelihood. I have seen poverty very closely. I have lived in poverty.

Narendra Modi: A Political Biography

As a child, my entire childhood was steeped in poverty. As very few people have direct access to meet and interview PM Modi, the Author of this book travelled with him before the Lok sabha elections, interviewed him, asked about his philosophy of life, about his early life in the RSS as a pracharak, his ups and downs in BJP, and he also discussed the infamous ''Gujarat riots'' with balanced facts and figures. Narendra damodardas modi was born on 17 Sep in the town of vadnagar in gujarat.

His father was a tea seller who used to sell tea at the nearby railway station and his mother was a housewife. Narendra was a very active child who enjoyed helping his father in their tea business. When he was only 8 years old he started attending the local shakhas of the Rashtriya swayamsevak sangh RSS , but the man who became Modi's mentor and guide in the RSS was a man by the name of 'vakil saheb'.

Young Narendra was a spiritual person who later leaved his home to find the purpose of his life. He travelled as far as Himalayas, wandered like a yogi throughout India and realized the spiritual Powers of hindustan. Modi's profile in the RSS had risen because of his underground activities during the draconian emergency in which he played a very active role. The BJP. And Because of his brilliant organizational skills and innovative thinking he was appointed by his party as the CM of Gujarat in Oct , and he remained as the CM for 12 long years, and he transformed gujarat from a riot prone state to a manufacturing and industrial hub.

The Author also discussed in this book about the 'Gujarat Model', and how the dynastic Congress party realized that modi was the real threat to the Congress hegemony. The language of the book is not that tough and there are several pictures of Modi in this book. I would recommend this book to those Readers who are interested in reading about the man who became the prime minister of India because of his talent and not because of his surname or family.

My Ratings: He is winning , probably too. As a close observer to the ever changing political scenario in India, I thought I had a good grasp of how politics and politicians work. I also knew that Modi was an anomaly to both left and right. But there was so much stuff that I didn't know.

This book is a different kind of biography. Yes, its about Modi, but it also dealt with changing political scenario and events of the country.

Any analysis of Modi's performance, his decisions are carefully scrutiniz He is winning , probably too. Any analysis of Modi's performance, his decisions are carefully scrutinized by thorough analysis of statistics, analysis of Modi's words, words of the contemporary personalities and media.

I mentioned that Modi is an anomaly to both left and right both of whom are used to a hardline political and economic ideology. Obviously, due to his kind of rebellious behavior, Modi had to face hardships and oppositions from outside as well as from his own party.

One of the most well researched and comprehensive chapter in this book is on riots. Any neutral person after reading that chapter would come to a conclusion that Modi has been a target of media and UPA for political reasons for over a decade.

You can't help but feel anger towards Congress and media. However, book also elaborates how this whole character assassination of Modi backfired and in fact helped Modi rise to the central stage in Wherever possible, book also deals with criticism of Modi in a fair way.

Answers are backed up by proper stats and research studies. Gujrat's model has been one of the greatest success stories amongst Indian states. One criticism of which has been that it isn't inclusive. These criticisms are also thoroughly answered and decimated as most of these are politically motivated without substance.

A fact, that most Indians are now able to see as evident in election results. Modi has been able to put a dent to vote bank politics, BJP winning seats in even Muslim majority constituencies. How did he achieved that?

List of books by or about Narendra Modi

You'll be answered satisfactory. Love him or hate him, you can't deny that he's the strongest PM India had in a while. He has a clear perspective of achieving developmental goals for our nation and he is one of those rare politicians from left, right, center who doesn't make all his policies for vote bank politics.

No wonder everyone in the opposition has been targeting Modi. You might not like this book if you are a Congress supporter. Jun 21, Jay Jani rated it really liked it.

A fabulous read but don't expect too many spices Apr 10, Anurag Gupta rated it really liked it. The problem with a political biography, that too Indian, is that the author doesn't paint a clear picture. The author is always biased. This book has depth, and it shows how Indian politics work. Definitely worth a read if you're interested in what happened in the last few decades of politics, and Prime Minister is a fascinating subject himself, he did rise up with his work ethic and ideology to our pm from a rebellious boy who joined rss and started his political career doing petty chores.

But The problem with a political biography, that too Indian, is that the author doesn't paint a clear picture. But now I have to read politics from another perspective to get some balance. Oct 02, Rishi rated it really liked it. Andy Marino have protrayed Modi life from his early days up till now. He elaborate how Modi climbed ladder by ladder by his hardship and dedication to reach the position he is now.

Very inspiring story and Worth Reading!! Mar 02, Umesh Kesavan rated it it was ok Shelves: The author's sources are books and journalists sympathetic to Narendra Modi as well as Modi himself. Hence, the book presents an unbalanced portrait wherein everything that has gone right is attributed to Modi and all wrong outcomes explained by external factors.

Jun 22, Hamsini rated it did not like it. Reads like a propoganda brochure! Nabila Shaikh So glad someone also saw through all that propaganda Apr 08, Aug 09, Chetan rated it really liked it. Wr to read it.

Apr 04, Vishwanath Malyekar rated it liked it. Aptly titled Narendra Modi: A political biography, this book by Andy Marino does not delve in to the personal life of Mr. Modi to its intricate details, and will disappoint those who want to know about Narendra Modi the Man.

However the Biography highlights the though process of a man who has been elected majorly on the plank of development agenda as the Prime Minister of the Country. The Development Model adopted by the State of Gujarat under Modi, has been explained in details which to say is very impressive.

Written well one only wishes that the book could have been a more comprehensive in dealing with all aspects of Modi's life. Feb 24, Prashanth rated it liked it. A well researched book. It does give you a neutral perspective. I have never been a Modi fan and have always had this impression that he was the 'primary' reason for the riots. I haven't researched too much into the details of why or how he was responsible for the riots.

I went by the media but this book does give the background details assuming the details to be true of the riots and Modi's course of action. The book starts with Modi's childhood days and then moves on to his RSS days as a A well researched book. The book starts with Modi's childhood days and then moves on to his RSS days as a teenager. The book starts slowly but picks up pace once Modi becomes the CM and the riots happen.

The riot chapters , punctuated with so many facts and evidences, forced me to give the benefit of the doubt to Modi. Going by the facts stated in the book , it was NOT Modi's inaction that made the riots worse. The author being a foreigner makes it more credible does give a good idea on the developments of Gujarat.

Those chapters were too much numbers and copy paste of newspaper articles where I felt like putting the book down. But somehow managed to read those and finish the book.

The final few pages talk about his moves to become the PM and was a decent read.

Overall a book recommended for Modi haters so that you can get a decent picture of the man, that will probably turn you into a neutral!! I have always admired innovators and go-getters. In a country with world's second largest population, it is not easy to fight or change the system unless you are super determined.

It's easy to talk big and forget about it the next morning.

It is easy to want good things and positive change. But it is not easy to have the courage to stand up and work towards it, risking your own life. You have to be super driven to fix the mess with almost nil to less selfish interest.

A wonderful read and couldn't resist myself to avoid any pause despite many senior preferences and time constraints.I went by the media but this book does give the background details assuming the details to be true of the riots and Modi's course of action.

My Ratings: Bhandari, and the state assembly was dissolved.

His supporters regard him as the visionary, decisive leader India needs today. An average man can find a reflection of his own struggle in the life of Modi. Work is being done towards achieving the expectations. He tore away all the pictures of our marriage because he never wanted even a single photo to remain with me. This was in keeping with the usual practice of the Hindu bigots to exploit the chariot procession to incite anti-Muslim pogroms.
